Subsonic HeadDub - History

Subsonic HeadDub began in 1995 in Hull East Yorkshire as an experimental Live Dub venture, as an extension to Dub Trance Experience a regular Dub Event. Initially Astralp was dubbing the tunes which were to become SH, when Jeckyl showed an interest in collaborating in a live situation.

The first line-up consisted of Astral Pedestrian and Jeckyl on Drums, shortly joined by co-Dub Trance Experience DJ Bud providing vinyl sound effects to the mesh. Around this time aside from Dub Trance Experience, Subsonic supported Back to Base at a few events. In 1997 Leviathan joined the mix on Analog synths, and was possibly the craziest dubs, subsonic produced live.

Visually the performances always features psychedelic lighting and plenty of smoke, the band silhouettes beyond the backdrop of colour. The intention was for the audience to immerse in the experience and become involved in the whole process. The album ‘Live ‘n Dubbed’ captures the atmosphere of this period, collected from the few rare recordings made in this era.

During the summer of 97 Jeckyl departed and Leviathan took over on Electro Drums, and bassist Faroe joined the line-up, and Astral Pedestrian moved from dubbing to guitar. The only existing recording of this period is ‘Drone Jam.’ This line-up only played two gigs, one at the Adelphi and the other at the August Bank Holiday All Day event at the Pump and Tap in Leicester, as one of the headlining acts, which was the last time Subsonic played live.

Astral Pedestrian and Faroe then went on to form Nazca Nine which became the main focus. However, Astral Pedestrian has continued Subsonic HeadDub as a studio project ever since, producing HeadDubSubSonic in 1998-1999 and the finally released Organic Dubs (2000-2005). There are definitely no plans to stop the project in the future and the possibility of a live line-up happening again is a possibility.
